After we came back to the trail, Jake was feeling better and he was dubbed a new name, Bullseye! We hiked about a week more in Pennsylvania and decided to
stay at the jail house hostel in Palmerton, PA, which is free. It is located in
the basement of the municipal town building. We got there, chose our bunk, then
went up to find the shower. It was upstairs and across the gym with an old
cracked door. The shower itself was open like a jail shower, but hey a shower is
a shower and it felt so nice. After that, we went to the town diner and got some
delicious food. Later that night, when we got back to the hostel at dark, there
were a few more hikers that had just gotten there, one of which was named Stardust, the only other girl besides me. She stated she was going to shower and a guy named Eyes Adjust went to show her where it was. As I was preparing for bed,
Stardust came to me crying and told me that Eyes Adjust was watching her shower through the crack in the door. She had told him once to go away and he came back, got on the floor, and peered at her again. We told him he needed to leave but he wouldn't, so we called the police, who escorted him out. Everyone has been talking about the incident and letting others know about Eyes Adjust, as he is currently still on the trail. Despite this one hiker, every other hiker has been so kind
and we all look out for one another, and for Bullseye and me it feels great to
have each other.
The last few days of Pennsylvania were still tough, so needless to say, getting
to Delaware Water Gap, which is right before the NJ border, was extremely
exciting. We decided to do another free hostel stay at a church. When we got
there we saw Rabbit and Sweet Tea who we had run into back in Palmerton. We
showered, collected our packages, and sat in the air conditioning talking to
some south bounders who gave us great advice on the upcoming states. When
evening rolled around, Rabbit, Sweet Tea, and us played a few rounds of Boggle.
The next morning we were out and ready to hike. The Kittanny State Park Visitors
Center was really nice and gave us presents...a patch that says AT Georgia to
Maine, and a badge that says Junior Park Ranger. We got to a pretty busy
campsite that night where Pilgrim, Rabbit, Uncle Fool, Daddy Long Legs, and Baby
Steps were, as well as a group of Boy Scouts. Since we are in Bear Country
everyone is hanging their food again. The next morning we got up nice and early,
which paid off because we got to enjoy some trail magic along with everyone else
that we camped with...burgers, veggie burgers, hotdogs, juice, fruit, cookies,
and sour kraut. The Huntington Hiking Group put it on and they were very
insistent on us eating as much as we could fit in our bellies. With all that
food, we hiked 17 miles to Culvers Tower where we got to watch a beautiful
sunset. While we haven't been in Jersey for too long, the feel is so much
different. We finally get views again, and after 3 days we are already about
half way through.
And on a side note... After looking at our guide book, we chose 3 more mail drops
that people can send packages to through August. These are the last ones we
are doing for the rest of the trail. We want to thank everyone so much who has
helped us out and sent us things. It helps us out so much!
